Jerry Lawson National Manager, ENERGY STAR Congregations Network, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Jerry Lawson introduced the EPA ENERGY STAR Congregational Award and shares his vast knowledge and initiatives with congregations, small businesses and individuals. "The energy strategy implemented is synergistic with Jewish law and tradition, which emphasizes respect and taking care of our environment and resources," says Rabbi Alvin Wainhaus of 2008 Award winning Congregation Or Shalom in Orange, Connecticut. "The visual energy savings efforts at the temple created a pride and enthusiasm with the congregation and the community at large."
Congregation Or Shalom began its journey toward energy efficiency with a desire to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating expenses. It escalated quickly with 12-year old Jared Loewenthal's interest in energy conservation. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Jared redesigned the synagogue's eternal light to be powered by solar energy. Many additional energy improvements were also made by the congregation. Lawson says; “Most congregations may cut energy costs by up to 30 percent by investing strategically in efficient equipment and improved maintenance”.
