The Lounge and Learn Program at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks, CA provides adult education to parents (and others) while their children attend religious school on Sunday mornings. The programs are held on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Sunday of each month and are open to all congregants. Men’s Club conducts the session on the 1st Sunday, when the title for the program is “Introduction to Jewish Ritual Practices.” This application focuses specifically on the session conducted by Men’s Club.
The session regarding Jewish ritual practices lasts two hours and is comprised of four half-hour segments:
- Open/time for socializing
We organize the physical setting to align with the theme. For example, white table cloths and candlesticks are provided when reviewing the Shabbat theme; twisted candle, spice box, and wine are available when discussing the Havdallah ceremony. Handouts are provided as well as a CD with music. We emphasize an experiential approach to the rituals rather than a more traditional, didactic approach, enabling participants to better apply what they have learned and practice the rituals more frequently.
