M5: the Men's Club Mar-Cheshvan Monday Morning Minyan

You have to feel sorry for Cheshvan.

As Jewish months go, Cheshvan doesn’t have a lot going for it. Tishrei, the month that immediately precedes it, is packed with holidays - Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah - that range from solemn to festive. But then, Cheshvan rolls in as autumn transitions from a time of crisp mornings and bright leaves to a period of increasingly dreary weather. And there’s not a single holiday or special occasion in the entire month. No wonder we call it Mar-Cheshvan - “Bitter Cheshvan.”

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We Men’s Club guys can change it.

Our Modest Proposal: Give Mar-Cheshvan a special day of its own, Men’s Club style. (The ladies have Rosh Chodesh - why don’t we have our own day?)

Let’s celebrate the first Monday of Mar-Cheshvan and turn it into a Guy Holiday. Go to morning minyan. Have a special d’var Torah. Put on a breakfast for the minyan crowd.

We’re calling it M5: the Men’s Club Mar-Cheshvan Monday Morning Minyan. Got a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

This year, the first Monday of Cheshvan is October 27. Make it a special day. Get your club to turn out, put on tefillin, and have a great shacharit service. Let Cheshvan know that it doesn’t have to stand in the corner of the Jewish calendar by itself. Give it some love!
