Reaching Out to Our Youth
What better way to celebrate the Worldwide Wrap on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 4, 2007) then to have 4th and 5th graders designing their own tefillin sets as part of a classroom project. The tefillin effort was underwritten by the Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah Men’s Club, and many of the students made sure their “hand-crafted” tefillin was very carefully wrapped the day of the program. As part of the preparation, Board member Steven Bucksbaum videotaped the students’ classroom experience before the Feb. 4 event. Mr. Bucksbaum made sure that part of the tape included the Chicago Bears’ theme song, “Bear Down Chicago Bears” since our favorite football team was participating later that day in the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts (in Miami). Even our “Food for Thought” breakfast during the Wrap had a Bears football theme with “orange and blue” tablecloths, napkins, plates and plastic ware. Everyone enjoyed the entire program, focused principally at explaining the meaning of tefillin, to our BHCBE youth. Rabbi Allan Kensky’s breakfast talk also addressed this timely theme.
Note: The CD is available and we welcome the opportunity to present it during the FJMC Convention this July. A photo of one student wearing his very own tefillin is attached. A second shows Phil Sharkan and his son, Justin, getting into the wrapping spirit. Phil Sharkan and Joel Dolin serve as our Club’s Religion & Education co-chairs.
