2009 A Night of Jewish Astronomy with Dad

As we were looking for an event that would bring kids and adults together, a “Jewish Astronomy Night with Dad” was an appealing idea. In sunny southern California, clear nights are the rule – and we had two Men’s Club Members with amateur astronomy interests and amateur telescopes. Our plan was to give a short presentation on an upcoming meteor shower (the Leonids) and then spend an hour viewing the heavens.

2011 Basketball with the Boys

WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF AN EVENT THAT WAS COMING TO TOWN. THE EXHIBITION GAME BETWEEN MACCABI TEL AVIV AND THE LA CLIPPERS WAS ANNOUNCED. WE ENCOURAGED FATHERS AND SONS (OR DAUGHTERS OR GRANDCHILD) TO ATTEND. WE BOUGHT 50 TICKETS, SUBSIDIZED THEM TO MAKE THEM MORE AFFORDABLE $75 FOR A $100 TICKET), ADVERTISED THE EVENT, AND ARRANGED CARPOOLS.

2007 Daddies and Darlings

Since 2005 the Adas Israel Men’s Club has held an annual “Daddies and Darlings” program for fathers and their pre-school aged children. It is the only activity of its kind in the congregation. The program itself involves an entertainer to play games and sing songs with the children, but it is the way in which younger men are being involved in Men’s Club activities that deserves the most recognition.

2011 Father / Daughter Hanukkah Dance

This event has become an “Instant Classic!” We transformed our traditional Hanukkah dance for older couples into a father/daughter dance. We had 60 “couples” in our first year, a DJ, decorated social hall, kidfriendly Hanukkah food, gift bags for the girls, games, and fun. Most girls were between 5-10 years old, but we had a couple of toddlers and a woman who was escorted by her 83 year-old father! We had a prom-style photo booth and each MC member received a free 5 x 7 photo. Non-members paid $5 for each photo, and everyone could order extras.

2007 Jack Lippe Memorial Scholarship

The Jack Lippe Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Jack Lippe, former president of the Agudath Israel Men’s Club and an active participant in youth programs as well as participating in synagogue activities and programs. The late Jack Lippe was a respected member of this congregation and a devoted Men’s Club member and president. He performed invaluable service with the youth of our community. To honor his memory and give assistance and recognition to deserving students, the Men’s Club Jack Lippe Memorial Scholarship Fund was established.

2007 Menorah Mania

Our Menorah Mania contest was a fun way to have children and parents creatively celebrate the holiday of Hanukah. All ages of religious school children could enter the contest. They were allowed to have parental help. The only rule was they had to have room for eight candles and one Shamash.  The entries were displayed on tables in the synagogue lobby and winners in each category were chosen to receive a prize.

2011 New Ideas for Temple Picnic and BBQ

This is our last major event for the year, we generally put together a picnic in conjunction with a Temple Membership Open House. Instead of a simple “Hamburgers and Hot Dogs” afternoon, the Temple Etz Chaim Men’s Club has connected with the Temple Membership Committee and Youth Committees to bring our Temple members an afternoon of food, fun, and festivities. Finally, we plan a special “after party” for the Men’s Club Members participating in planning this outstanding event.
